I’ve been looking forward to Patrick Read Johnson’s 5-25-77 (since retitled simply 77) ever since I first heard about it — obviously, the story of a young movie geek in the late 70s is gonna resonate pretty seriously with me, since, like Patrick Johnson, I was also standing around in my backyard making Super-8 movies at that time, and anxiously awaiting the release of a movie that was starting to get some buzz in Starlog magazine (take a wild guess as to what that flick was).
However, after a couple of apparently successful festival screenings several years ago, 77 seems to have fallen off the map. The trailer (check it out below) sends me into fits of geeky nostalgia — which, now that I think of it, might be the problem — maybe distributors think that only goofballs like me would turn out to see this flick. Whatever the reasons behind the delay in 77‘s release, I wish Patrick Johnson would give us an update. I know there are a lot of folks out there who can’t wait to see the movie.
